What is Digital Business?
Why is Google so successful? How does Amazon's online store work? What does Tesla have ahead of German car manufacturers? Which new business models such as Uber and AirBnB can be expected in the next few years? What significance do data and software have in this?
These and similar questions are the focus of the bachelor's degree program in Digital Business. The program focuses on interdisciplinary study content that deals with the development and application of information technologies in an essential subfield of business informatics.
Shaping the Digital Transformation
The overarching context of the course is shaped by the digital transformation of business and society. Digital technologies have a strong impact on our everyday lives. People spend time in digital media, shop on the Internet and obtain many services via different apps.
Companies in Germany increasingly have to deal with the design of digital business and operating models (such as Google, Amazon, Tesla, Uber and AirBnB). Within the guiding theme of digital business, content from computer science is combined with content from business administration in connection with the design of digital business models, software-based products and services, the development of digital interfaces with entrepreneurial stakeholders (e.g., customers, society, politics), and the modeling and implementation of internal company value creation processes.
Digital Business and Business Informatics
Digital business is a subarea of business informatics. Students acquire competencies in computer science, business informatics and economics. In the sense of a practice-oriented education, the degree program qualifies students for a variety of job profiles that are in demand primarily for startups, small and medium-sized enterprises, and product and innovation areas in consulting, industrial, and service companies.
Professionals with a strong qualification for digital business are employed in consulting organizations, industrial and service companies, among others. Relevant areas of application lie in many different job descriptions, e.g., in the development of new digital products and services, in marketing and eCommerce, in the design of media and content, in the development of a contemporary IT infrastructure, or in the design of artificial intelligence.
Interdisciplinarity and practical relevance
The degree program therefore implements a close link between the teaching of the fundamentals of computer science, business administration and business informatics and the solution of application-oriented problems. This is expressed in particular by project-oriented teaching and a strong integration of business practice.
Special emphasis is placed on the practical relevance of the course material as well as on the individual support of the students. In addition to the acquisition of professional skills, the focus is also on personal development. To this end, students acquire competencies in the areas of teamwork, didactics, interdisciplinary cooperation, and practice-oriented communication and presentation of complex problems and their solutions.
Independent thinking, decision-making and action on the part of the students as an essential contribution both to personality development and to a scientific as well as professional qualification is promoted in particular by project-oriented teaching and the practical semester.
Profiling and Electives
The elective area enables both individual profile formation and the further development of interdisciplinary skills. It is precisely this interdisciplinarity that contributes significantly to the qualification for a qualified occupation, as the subject area serves to connect specialist disciplines across the board.
Students with an above-average bachelor's degree have the option of deepening their education by pursuing a master's degree. Therefore, the study program imparts the competence for the application of scientific methods and for a scientifically oriented solution of entrepreneurial issues.
